What transparent actually means
A PNG can store a fourth channel alongside red, green and blue called alpha, which records how opaque each pixel is. Where alpha is zero the pixel is invisible, so whatever is behind shows through.
The checkerboard pattern you see in image editors is not part of the file. It is how editors draw "nothing here". If you see a checkerboard, the transparency is working.

Fixing the white box or white edge
A white rectangle behind the image means transparency was lost. Almost always the file was converted to JPEG somewhere in the chain — by a messaging app, by a "save image as" that defaulted to JPEG, or by an editor exporting at the wrong setting. JPEG has no alpha channel, so the transparency is not hidden, it is gone. Download the PNG again from source.
A thin white or grey halo around the edges is different. That is left over from the original background being removed imperfectly, and it shows up when you place the clipart on a dark background. It can usually be fixed by shrinking the selection by one or two pixels, or by using a "defringe" or "remove matte" command if your editor has one.
Jagged, stair-stepped edges mean the transparency is one-bit — each pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible, with nothing in between. This happens with GIFs and with PNG-8. A proper PNG-24 or PNG-32 file has soft, anti-aliased edges.

If clipart looks fine on white and terrible on black, it is almost certainly PNG-8. Everything offered here is PNG-32.
Sizing before you place it
Scale down, never up. A 2000-pixel PNG reduced to 500 stays sharp. A 500-pixel PNG enlarged to 2000 becomes soft and there is no way back — the detail was never in the file.
For printing, aim for around 300 pixels per inch of final size. A cake topper printed at four inches wide needs roughly 1200 pixels.
For screen use, match the space it is going into and no more. An oversized PNG in a slide deck or a web page slows everything down for no visible benefit.
Keeping transparency through the tools
Do not send a transparent PNG through a chat app if you need it to stay transparent. Most apps convert to JPEG and the alpha channel is discarded silently. Send it as a file attachment or by email instead.
Google Slides, PowerPoint and Canva all preserve PNG transparency on import. Word usually does too, though older versions occasionally flatten it on save.
When exporting, look for "transparent background" as an explicit checkbox. Many tools default to a white background even when the source had none.
Save a master copy. Keep the original PNG somewhere untouched and work from copies. Once transparency is flattened out of a file it cannot be recovered by any tool.
Licence — what you can actually do
